When constructing buildings near coastal areas, one of the biggest challenges is protecting cladding materials from the effects of high humidity, salt-laden air, and strong ocean winds. In such harsh environments, magnesium-coated steel emerges as a superior solution, providing optimal protection for construction projects.
WHAT IS MAGNESIUM-COATED STEEL?
IS MAGNESIUM-COATED STEEL EFFECTIVE AGAINST CORROSION?
Magnesium-coated steel is a type of steel sheet coated with an alloy layer composed of zinc, 5% aluminum, 3% magnesium, and trace amounts of rare earth elements. Magnesium and these rare earth elements act as catalysts that promote the formation of a crystalline protective layer known as Simonkolleite (SKT) — a highly stable compound with excellent anti-corrosion properties. The SKT layer has a tight structure that acts as a barrier against corrosive agents. Once formed, the SKT coating gradually migrates to the outer surface to seal and protect the exposed steel substrate, especially at cut edges where the coating may not be present. This unique self-healing capability is a major reason why magnesium-coated steel offers superior corrosion resistance.
ZINMAG® is a magnesium alloy coated steel product developed by Ton Nam Kim Joint Stock Company, in collaboration with MGK and Van Der Laan International Consultancy B.V. Nam Kim is proud to be the only Vietnamese company to successfully develop and commercialize this innovative product under the brand name ZINMAG®.
Key Benefits of ZINMAG® for Coastal Construction Projects:
a) 5X MORE DURABLE THAN GALVANIZED STEEL (GL) WITH THE SAME COATING THICKNESS
ZINMAG® stands out for its superior corrosion resistance compared to traditional galvanized coatings. The magnesium alloy layer forms a strong protective barrier against the corrosive effects of salt and humidity.
b) HIGH RESISTANCE TO SURFACE ABRASION AND FRICTION
ZINMAG® features self-sealing capabilities. The alloy particles encapsulate the steel substrate (HRC), protecting it from external environmental factors.

c) LIMIT EDGE CORROSION COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL COATED ALLOYS
The Simonkolleite layer naturally seals and protects cut edges, preventing environmental exposure and significantly reducing edge corrosion.
d) EXCELLENT CORROSION RESISTANCE IN HARSH ENVIRONMENTS: LIVESTOCK, CHEMICALS, COASTAL AREAS
Specially developed coating technology allows this material to withstand extreme environments, fully usable in C5 environments.
e) NEAR-ZERO WHITE MOLD
The self-regenerating SKT layer keeps the surface clean and resistant to white mold.
f) REDUCED MAINTENANCE AND REPLACEMENT COSTS
Using high-performance materials like ZINMAG® results in long-term savings in maintenance, repair, and replacement expenses.
